Fall Migration
October 14 - 24, 2023
Home Sweet Moveable Home. Buckaroos wanted for Migration in the Darkhad. I've been given the opportunity to bring a few friends and help a nomadic family from the Darkhad region move their ger, wood-burning stove and animals - possibly yak, cows, sheep and hopefully no camels or reindeer, to their seasonal fresh gazing land. On horseback and with pack animals in tow, we'll head off to the Horidal Saridag mountain, west of Lake Khuvsgul. It's about a four-day trek through one of the most beautiful parts of the country and hopefully, we'll be able to help keep the animals heading in the right direction. I've met Shamans, Tsaatan People who raise reindeer, a camel whisperer and some great buckaroo cowboys in this remote countryside.

MACHU PICCHU TREK
Machu Picchu to A Testosterone-Free Trek
October 21 - 30. 2023
Staying in lodges w/gourmet food, wine & hot tubs along the way, we hike on an ancient Inca Trail known as the Salkantay Route in the Cordillera Vicamba, that magnificent Andean mountain range that cradles Machu Picchu. We can acclimatize at the first class Salkantay Lodge for a couple of days to adjust to the 12,700’ elevation. I don’t know if it is the gourmet food or hot tub or acclimatizing hike to a nearby lake that helps the adjustment! Then, escorted by experienced guides and using pack animals to carry our luggage, we hike from lodge to lodge for four days until we get to the famous Inkaterra Pueblo. From this lovely base, we will explore Machu Picchu with enough time for a couple of sunrises and sunsets before an afternoon train to Cusco. If you have the time, an extension by train into El Valle Sagrada (The Sacred Valley) can be included!
LAOS & CAMBODIA

Transfer to Siem Reap, Cambodia, and take three days to explore Angkor Wat and the surrounding area. Break up the sightseeing with a cooking class before finishing up with a couple of days in Phnom Penh, the charming capital of Cambodia. This is a very comfortable tour, staying in lovely boutique hotels and traveling at a relaxed pace with time to discover the culture and explore the countryside. The goal of this 14-day journey is to showcase the best aspects of Vietnam's natural beauty, historical richness, and cultural charm, as well as its people. Start in the bustling Hanoi capital, then discover the many diverse cultures of the North with a visit to Mai Chau. Hike through the rolling countryside and discover the wonders of the Pu Luong Nature Reserve. A quiet early morning visit to the monuments of Hue and then a bicycle ride into the countryside, a fresh morning market followed by a cooking class in laid-back Hoi An, and a night tour on Vespa or in a sidecar in Ho Chi Minh City will add to your collection of memorable experiences. You might consider extending your stay for a few beach days on nearby Phu Quoc Island or, even more remote, Con Dao. (Turtles will be beaching from June to September.) This 14-day journey introduces you to the main sights and some lesser-known spots in Hanoi, the sublime limestone islands and sandy beaches of Lan Ha Bay, the laid-back charm of Hoi An, the mighty Mekong Delta, and the vibrant Ho Chi Minh City. BHUTAN
An Intimate Introduction
February 13 - 23, 2024
This itinerary is a personal introduction to the people and places that have deeply inspired me over the last 30+ years in Bhutan. We travel to Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha in western Bhutan; Central Bhutan from the Black Mountains to Trongsa; and two famous valleys of Bumthang: Chummey and Choekhar, the spiritual heartland of the country. Our program includes sightseeing, walks, birding, and time for interactions with local people as we travel from central Bhutan back to Paro. We will attend one of the most interesting religious ceremonies in the country, the Punakha Drupchen. Colorful yak herders from the high mountain villages of Lingshe and Laya will join the party, as well as locals and government officials. I can't think of a better time to be there. BTW, all hotels, no camping. (An itinerary focused more on a spiritual pilgrimage is also available.)
ITALY - LAKES
OFF THE BEATEN PATH IN THE LAKE REGION
Hiking by and exploring around Lakes Orta
May 19 - 25, 2024
June 16 - 21, 2024
Soak in the Mediterranean atmosphere of lakeside towns such as Orta San Giulio, Bellagio, and Varenna. Discover secluded valleys with century-old traditions, artisans with their exquisite handicrafts, and wilderness areas and verdant summer pastures, where silence is broken only by the soothing sound of cowbells. Venturing into the foothills of the Alps, hike to perfect vantage points offering stunning balcony views over the lakes and their backdrop of mountains. Visit lovely islands, manicured gardens, and opulent palaces and villas. Except for Day 6, when we overnight at a 4-star hotel in Como, we end our days with comfortable accommodations in three-star hotels by the lake. Our elaborate picnics will consist of exquisite delicacies from the area. Lunches on Days 4 and 5, will be at local restaurants. Throughout the week, we’ll dine on fine Piemontese and Lombard cuisine and sip world-famous regional wines. Like most guests, you might consider spending a few more days, enjoying the area around Lake Como on your own. With early planning, this is the perfect itinerary for a private party!

Merak Sakten Trek
The Broker Herders of Merak
and Sakten
April 7 - 20, 2024
October 20 - November 2, 2024
We enter Bhutan through the southeast gateway to Tashigang before setting out on our 6-day trek to the high grazing meadows of the eastern Himalaya, home of the unique Tibeto-Burmese ethnic group known as Brokpas. Standing about a foot taller than most Bhutanese, wearing homespun red-dyed clothing, and the men adding yak hide chaps and a vest with the fur still on, they sustain themselves with large herds of yak in a remote pocket of eastern Bhutan. The area is also home to the Bhutanese Yeti, known as Migoi, and we will visit the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, a 650 sq km reserve that was created to protect the yeti habitat. We finish our trip with a 2 1/2-day drive across Bhutan during springtime, with all 54 species of rhododendron and many other flowers in bloom. We will camp for 6 nights and then visit Mongar, Bumthang, Trongsa, Punakha, Thimphu, and Paro before departing for Bangkok and beyond.

September 16 - 27, 2024
This 12-day discovery tour of Portugal includes Porto, Aveiro, Paiva Walkways, Douro, Tomar, Obidos, Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, and Alentejo, with a complement of great food and wine along the way. Besides the spectacular castles, churches, and plazas we visit, the elegant and charming palaces and estates that we stay in, and private tastings and meals arranged for us, we take the time to enjoy the local rhythms and traditions in the neighborhoods we discover. The personal introductions we make at our private wine tastings and our visits with some of the finest artisans can be most memorable. Exploring neighborhoods that are reinventing tradition in the most fabulous of ways with quirky galleries and inventive restaurants is an adventure, and the beauty of their history and tradition is everywhere.

This itinerary allows us to visit four distinct regions in a short amount of time: the fossil-rich Gobi Desert with its soaring dunes and excavation sites; the pristine and natural setting of Lake Khuvsgul with dense larch and pine forests and meadows of wildflowers knee-deep; the glaciated peaks of the northwest where you spend time with descendants of Chinggis Khaan who still hunt with eagles and create fine embroidery and detailed appliquéd work. We include a full day at Naadam, a colorful national festival with beautiful pageantry, horse racing, archery, and wrestling. Activities include sightseeing, travel by car or jeep, optional camel and horseback rides, and accommodations in hotels or gers. No camping.

One of the most enjoyable vacations I have ever had. Visit the historic city of Dubrovnik before boarding your private gullet for seven days, sailing to several distinctly different islands off the coast. Kayaking, swimming, and special excursions at each stop along the way. Land in Split and drive to the capital city of Zagreb via Zadar. Possible to extend your visit to meet some of the best winemakers in the country and go truffle hunting in Northern Istria.

Eagle Hunters and SnowLeopards
September 28
October 8, 2024
Eagle Hunters in Mongolia and attend their annual competition. Our crew will set up our private ger camp nearby, and we will join them for a couple of days hunting on horseback or an ATV and maybe sharing a meal or two before joining our team at the Eagle Hunters Competition. From there, we head to the remote Omno Uliastai Valley in front of Jargalant Khairkhan Mountain, where we will track snow leopards. We'll set up our gear in this valley, and from this base camp, we will go out and set up motion sensor cameras and head out daily to look for scat, pug marks, and other markings to add to our data. With the help of expert local trackers, there is a very good chance of seeing the elusive snow leopard of Mongolia. While in Ulan Bataar, the capital, we stay in a centrally located hotel. In the countryside, rugged adventure in the most comfortable way possible: gers with stoves for heat, solar showers or buckets of hot water, a camp chef, and a dining tent Chocolate on the pillow nightly. Activities include sightseeing, learning how to handle eagles, festivals, hiking, and horseback riding. Please note that horseback riding is optional and can be substituted by daily hiking, overland travel, or fishing. Exact horseback riding time is flexible due to the rider's skill and weather. Accommodations are in hotels and gers with camp toilets and showers. ** An extension to explore the Gobi Desert is available.
